Braces and clear aligners straighten crooked, crowded or gappy teeth and correct bite problems. Braces use brackets and wires fixed to the teeth. Clear aligners are a series of nearly invisible, removable plastic trays. Treatment usually takes about 6–24 months, depending on how much the teeth need to move, and a retainer keeps the result afterwards. ### How long does it take to straighten teeth?

Usually 6–24 months. Mild cases with aligners can be quicker, and complex bite problems take longer.

### Are clear aligners as good as braces?

For mild to moderate crowding and spacing, aligners work very well, if you wear them 20–22 hours a day. Complex cases may do better with braces. Your dentist will advise.

### Is there an age limit for braces?

No. Children, teenagers and adults can all have orthodontic treatment, as long as the teeth and gums are healthy.

### Do I need a retainer after braces?

Yes. Teeth tend to drift back, so a retainer is needed after treatment, usually long-term.
