Professional teeth cleaning, also called scaling and polishing, removes hardened plaque (tartar) and surface stains that brushing can't. ## What happens during a cleaning?

1. **Check:** your teeth and gums are examined for cavities and gum problems.
2. **Scaling:** an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments remove tartar from the teeth and along the gum line.
3. **Polishing:** a polishing paste removes surface stains and smooths the teeth, so plaque sticks less.

## Why do I need professional cleaning if I brush every day?

### Does scaling damage tooth enamel?

No. Professional scaling removes tartar, not enamel. Teeth may feel sensitive for a day or two, especially if there was a lot of tartar.

Heavy tartar can fill the spaces between teeth. Once it is removed, you notice the gaps that were already there. The gums usually tighten again as they heal.
