# Breast Reduction FAQs

## About breast reduction

### What is breast reduction surgery?

Also called reduction mammaplasty, it reduces breast size and lifts the breast by removing extra fat, gland tissue and skin.

### Who should consider it?

Women whose breasts are too large for their frame, or whose breasts cause pain, rashes or self-consciousness. See [Do you need breast reduction?](/do-you-need-breast-reduction)

### What are the benefits?

Back and neck pain usually ease soon after surgery. Many women become more active and find standard bras and blouses fit.

### Does breast reduction also lift the breasts?

Yes. A proper reduction includes a lift, so a separate lift usually isn't needed.

### Can liposuction alone reduce my breasts?

Only for a few women with fatty breasts and good skin. Most need surgery for a good shape.

## Scars, pain and risks

### Where are the scars?

A vertical (lollipop) reduction leaves a scar around the areola and one straight down. Very large breasts need an anchor (Wise-pattern) scar, which adds a scar under the breast. See [Types of breast reduction](/types-of-breast-reduction).

### How painful is it?

Mild to moderate pain is expected and is usually controlled with regular painkillers.

### What are the risks?

Rarely, poor blood flow causes tissue loss, which is more likely in smokers. Breasts may be slightly uneven, and scars may stay dark or raised.

## Pregnancy and breastfeeding

### Can I have breast reduction before pregnancy?

Yes, especially if your breasts cause back pain or hygiene problems. Later pregnancies can change size again.

### How long should I wait after pregnancy?

Several months after you stop breastfeeding, to lower the risk of infection and cysts.

### Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?

Possibly, but it can reduce or prevent breastfeeding in some women. Discuss it with your surgeon first.
