Scars are graded by their thickness and colour, which helps decide the treatment.
Scar revision surgery (layered closure)
- The old scar is cut out under local anaesthesia.
- Any tight bands holding the scar down are released.
- The wound is closed in layers, from deep tissue up to the skin, to reduce tension on the new scar.
- Afterwards, external stitches, adhesive strips, silicone gel and laser help the new scar heal finely and lower the chance of the scar returning.
This works well for scars on the face and abdomen.
Non-surgical scar treatments
- Subcision: a fine needle releases the bands under depressed scars and prompts new collagen.
- Fillers: hyaluronic acid fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm lift sunken scars. Effects typically last about 1–2 years.
- Fat grafting: your own purified fat fills deeper scars.
- Microdermabrasion with PRP: smooths the surface and reduces pigment over the scar.
- Laser: Nd:YAG laser and laser scar revision.

Frequently asked questions
Can scars be removed completely?
No treatment can erase a scar completely. Treatment can make a scar flatter, thinner, smoother and closer to your skin colour, so it is much less noticeable.
What is the best treatment for acne scars?
It depends on the scar type. Many people do best with a combination, such as subcision, microneedling RF or CO2 laser, and fillers for deep scars.
Is scar revision surgery painful?
It is usually done under local anaesthesia as a day procedure, so you shouldn't feel pain during it. Mild soreness afterwards is controlled with painkillers.
