Who is breast reduction for?
Breast reduction may help if you have:
- breasts that are too large for your body frame
- back, neck or shoulder pain from the weight of your breasts
- rashes or skin irritation under the breasts
- deep grooves on your shoulders from bra straps
- difficulty exercising or finding clothes that fit
- one breast much larger than the other
- breasts that hang low, with nipples pointing down
It can be done at any adult age. If you plan to have children, discuss timing with your surgeon, because pregnancy can change breast size again. After a pregnancy, wait several months after you stop breastfeeding.

How is breast reduction done?
- You receive general anaesthesia.
- Cuts are made around the areola, down to the breast crease and, if needed, along the crease.
- Extra breast tissue, fat and skin are removed.
- The nipple and areola are moved higher, and a large areola is made smaller.
- The skin is brought together to shape a smaller, lifted breast.
- Liposuction can be added to slim the side of the chest near the armpit.
Because the breast is lifted as it is reduced, most women don't need a separate breast lift.
Recovery after breast reduction
- Day 1: you are helped out of bed for short walks. Drains, if any, come out after 1–2 days.
- First week: pain is mild to moderate and controlled with regular painkillers. Avoid bending, straining and lifting.
- Weeks 1–3: stitches are removed in stages, if they are not dissolving.
- About 2 weeks: most women return to desk work.
- Several weeks: wear your support bra, and return to exercise when your surgeon advises.
- Several months: swelling settles and the breasts reach their final shape.
Before and after
Can I breastfeed after breast reduction?
Possibly. The technique is designed to help keep the ability to breastfeed, but this cannot be guaranteed. Some women produce less milk or cannot breastfeed after surgery. If breastfeeding matters to you, discuss it before surgery.
What are the risks of breast reduction?
- Temporary loss of nipple sensation, which can take weeks to over a year to return. It is rarely permanent
- Slightly uneven breasts or nipple height, which can be adjusted later
- Scars that stay dark or raised
- Bleeding, infection or a reaction to anaesthesia
- Rarely, poor blood flow to tissue, which is more likely in smokers
Breast reduction does not increase your risk of breast cancer. Depending on your age and family history, you may need a mammogram before surgery.
