Teeth Whitening in Bangalore
Medically reviewed by Dr Nikhitha Raghunath, BDS, MDS, KSDC Reg. No. 31715A
Professional teeth whitening lightens stained or yellow teeth with a peroxide gel applied by a dentist. At Contura Clinic, Bangalore, you can choose in-clinic whitening, which takes about an hour, or custom home-whitening trays used over about 2 weeks. Results usually last from several months to a couple of years, depending on diet and habits. Whitening doesn't change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings.

What causes stained teeth?
- Tea, coffee, red wine and dark foods
- Smoking and chewing tobacco or paan
- Ageing, as enamel thins and the darker layer underneath shows through
- Some medicines, and too much fluoride in childhood, which can cause deeper stains that whitening may not fully fix
Is teeth whitening safe?
Yes, when it is done or supervised by a dentist. The dentist first checks for cavities and gum disease, protects your gums, and uses the right strength of gel. The most common side effect is temporary tooth sensitivity, which usually settles within a few days. Over-the-counter kits and strong gels used without supervision can irritate the gums and damage teeth.
How to keep your teeth white
- Rinse your mouth after tea, coffee or cola.
- Avoid smoking and tobacco.
- Brush twice a day and have a professional cleaning every 6 months.
- Use your home trays for occasional top-ups if your dentist advises.
Frequently asked questions
How long does teeth whitening last?
Usually from several months to about 2 years. It lasts longer if you limit tea, coffee and tobacco and keep up good oral hygiene.
Does teeth whitening damage enamel?
Not when it is done under a dentist's supervision with the right gel strength. Temporary sensitivity is common and settles within a few days.
Can whitening lighten crowns or veneers?
No. Whitening works only on natural teeth. If you plan new crowns or veneers, whiten first so they can be matched to your new shade.
Who should not have teeth whitening?
Pregnant or breastfeeding women, and people with untreated cavities, gum disease or very sensitive teeth, should wait. Whitening is not usually done before age 16.
