Root Canal Treatment in Bangalore

Medically reviewed by Dr Nikhitha Raghunath, BDS, MDS, KSDC Reg. No. 31715A

Root canal treatment (RCT) saves a tooth whose inner pulp is infected or inflamed, usually from deep decay, a crack or an injury. The dentist removes the infected pulp, cleans and shapes the root canals, and seals them. At Contura Clinic, Bangalore, it is done under local anaesthesia and usually takes 1–3 visits. Most back teeth need a crown afterwards to protect them.

Signs you may need a root canal

  • Severe or lingering toothache, especially when chewing or at night
  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lasts after the food or drink is gone
  • Swelling or a pimple-like bump on the gum near a tooth
  • A tooth that has darkened
  • A deep cavity or a cracked tooth

Some infected teeth cause no pain at all, so regular check-ups and X-rays matter.

How is a root canal done?

  1. X-ray and diagnosis: to see the infection and the shape of the roots.
  2. Numbing: local anaesthesia, so the procedure feels much like a filling.
  3. Cleaning: the infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped and disinfected.
  4. Sealing: the canals are filled and sealed to stop new infection.
  5. Restoring: a filling closes the tooth, and a crown is usually added later to protect it.

Root canal or extraction?

Saving your natural tooth is usually best. It keeps your bite, prevents neighbouring teeth from shifting and avoids the cost of replacing the tooth with an implant or bridge. If a tooth is too damaged to save, extraction may be needed.

Frequently asked questions

Is root canal treatment painful?

Modern root canal treatment is done under local anaesthesia and usually feels similar to having a filling. It relieves the pain caused by the infection. Mild soreness for a few days afterwards is normal.

How many visits does a root canal take?

Usually 1–3 visits. Some teeth can be treated in a single sitting. Teeth with a lot of infection may need more than one visit.

Do I need a crown after a root canal?

Most back teeth do, because a root-treated tooth becomes more brittle and can crack. Front teeth may only need a filling.

How long does a root canal tooth last?

With a good seal, a crown and regular check-ups, a root-treated tooth can last many years, often for life.
