Why do milk teeth matter?

Milk teeth help children chew, speak clearly and smile with confidence. They also hold space for the adult teeth. Decay in milk teeth can cause pain and infection, and can affect the adult teeth underneath. That's why cavities in milk teeth should be treated, not ignored.

Tips for parents

  • Clean your baby's gums with a soft, damp cloth, even before teeth appear.
  • Start brushing as soon as the first tooth comes through, with a smear of fluoride toothpaste.
  • Avoid putting your child to bed with a bottle of milk or juice.
  • Limit sweets, juice and sticky snacks, especially between meals.
  • Bring your child for a check-up every 6 months.

Use a smear of fluoride toothpaste the size of a grain of rice for children under 3, and a pea-sized amount from 3 to 6 years.

Frequently asked questions

When should my child first see a dentist?

When the first tooth appears, or by the first birthday. Early visits help prevent decay and let your child get used to the dentist.

Should cavities in milk teeth be filled?

Yes. Untreated decay in milk teeth can cause pain, infection and problems for the adult teeth. Fillings keep the tooth healthy until it falls out naturally.

How can I help my child not be scared of the dentist?

Keep the first visits short and positive, avoid words like "pain" or "injection", and bring your child for regular check-ups before any problem starts.
