A dental crown is a custom cap that covers and protects a damaged, weak or root-treated tooth and restores its shape. A dental bridge replaces one or more missing teeth with a false tooth held by crowns on the teeth either side. How is a crown or bridge fitted?
- Preparation: under local anaesthesia, the tooth is shaped to make room for the crown.
- Impression or scan: a mould or digital scan is taken, and a temporary crown is fitted.
- Fitting: at the next visit, the final crown or bridge is checked for fit, bite and colour, then cemented.
Bridge or implant?
A bridge is quicker and doesn't need surgery, but the teeth on either side must be filed down to hold it. An implant replaces the tooth on its own, without touching the neighbouring teeth, and helps preserve the jawbone.

How long do dental crowns last?
With good care, crowns usually last many years, often 10–15 years or more. Avoid biting hard objects and keep up regular check-ups.
Does getting a crown hurt?
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain. Mild sensitivity for a few days is common.
Will my crown look natural?
