Teeth Cleaning and Polishing in Bangalore

Medically reviewed by Dr Nikhitha Raghunath, BDS, MDS, KSDC Reg. No. 31715A

Professional teeth cleaning, also called scaling and polishing, removes hardened plaque (tartar) and surface stains that brushing can't. It protects against gum disease, cavities and bad breath, and leaves teeth smoother and brighter. At Contura Clinic, Bangalore, a cleaning usually takes about 30–45 minutes, and most people should have one every 6 months.

What happens during a cleaning?

  1. Check: your teeth and gums are examined for cavities and gum problems.
  2. Scaling: an ultrasonic scaler and fine hand instruments remove tartar from the teeth and along the gum line.
  3. Polishing: a polishing paste removes surface stains and smooths the teeth, so plaque sticks less.
  4. Advice: you get tips on brushing, flossing and products that suit your teeth.

Why do I need professional cleaning if I brush every day?

Even with good brushing, plaque builds up in hard-to-reach spots and hardens into tartar within days. Once it is hard, only a dentist can remove it. Left in place, tartar irritates the gums and leads to gum disease.

Frequently asked questions

Does scaling damage tooth enamel?

No. Professional scaling removes tartar, not enamel. Teeth may feel sensitive for a day or two, especially if there was a lot of tartar.

Why do my teeth feel loose or gappy after cleaning?

Heavy tartar can fill the spaces between teeth. Once it is removed, you notice the gaps that were already there. The gums usually tighten again as they heal.

Will cleaning make my teeth whiter?

Cleaning removes surface stains, so teeth look brighter. To change the colour of the teeth themselves, you need teeth whitening.
