Tooth Extraction and Wisdom Tooth Removal in Bangalore

Medically reviewed by Dr Nikhitha Raghunath, BDS, MDS, KSDC Reg. No. 31715A

A tooth is extracted when it is too damaged, infected or crowded to save. Wisdom teeth are the last molars to come through, usually between 17 and 25, and they are often removed when they are impacted, decayed or cause pain and infection. At Contura Clinic, Bangalore, extractions are done under local anaesthesia. Most people recover in about 3–7 days after a wisdom tooth removal.

When should a wisdom tooth be removed?

  • It is stuck (impacted) in the jaw or gum, causing pain or swelling
  • The gum over it keeps getting infected (pericoronitis)
  • It is decayed or damaging the tooth next to it
  • It is pushing other teeth or catching food you can't clean out

Wisdom teeth that are fully through, healthy and easy to clean may not need removing. An X-ray shows their position.

Aftercare: the first few days

  • Bite on the gauze for about 30–45 minutes after the extraction.
  • Don't spit, rinse hard, use a straw or smoke for at least 24–48 hours, to protect the blood clot.
  • Eat soft, cool food, and chew on the other side.
  • From the next day, rinse gently with warm salt water after meals.
  • Use a cold pack on the cheek for swelling, and take painkillers as advised.

What is a dry socket?

A dry socket happens when the blood clot in the socket dislodges or dissolves too early, exposing the bone. It causes strong, throbbing pain 2–4 days after the extraction. Smoking and using straws raise the risk. If you notice increasing pain after a few days, contact the clinic for treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is wisdom tooth removal painful?

You won't feel pain during the procedure because of local anaesthesia. Afterwards, swelling and soreness for a few days are normal and are controlled with painkillers.

How long does it take to recover from wisdom tooth removal?

Most people feel much better in 3–7 days. Swelling is usually worst on days 2–3.

Should I replace an extracted tooth?

Wisdom teeth don't need replacing. Other missing teeth should usually be replaced with an implant, bridge or denture, so neighbouring teeth don't shift.
